Everything I Touched Today (And Why It Matters)

We don’t realize how much we’re in motion until we stop and take inventory. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the little things—the routines, objects, and quiet habits that fill my days without asking for attention. So, today, I paid attention. I tracked everything I physically touched—not out of sentimentality, but curiosity.

Turns out, it painted a pretty honest picture of my life right now: structured, busy, evolving, and trying to be intentional in the midst of it all.

7:13 AM – My phone
The alarm went off before I felt ready. I reached over, tapped it off without snoozing (a small win), and didn’t let myself scroll. I’m trying to stop letting my day start with other people’s lives. Just silence. Just me.

7:20 AM – The fridge handle, eggs, and half an avocado
Breakfast is the one meal I like to keep consistent. I grabbed two eggs, cracked them into the pan, and sliced an avocado on the side. No dramatic recipe—just real food that makes me feel nourished. I ate it standing in my kitchen, the way I always do. No plate photo. Just a quiet moment that reminded me: fueling yourself well is one kind of discipline.

7:45 AM – Skincare favorites
My La Roche-Posay cleanser is always cold on my skin, which somehow wakes me up more than caffeine. I followed it with a vitamin C serum—my morning attempt at being preventative and optimistic. It’s not just a skincare step; it’s a signal to my brain: “Let’s get it together.”

8:00 AM – My uniform
Pulled on my black Lululemon Align leggings (still undefeated in comfort), an Alo quarter-zip (cropped, of course), and my white Hokas, which are holding on by a thread but still make me feel like I’m going places. Even if that place is just the coffee shop around the corner.

8:15 AM – My laptop
This one deserves a category of its own. I opened it up and immediately got pulled into the swirl of Slack messages, emails, tabs I forgot to close, and new ideas I couldn’t ignore. I used to resent how much time I spend on this device, but now I see it for what it is: the epicenter of everything I’m building. Work, side projects, planning, dreaming—it's all here.

10:00 AM – My keys and my caffeine
Left my apartment and grabbed my keys—still attached to the little leather keychain I got from a boutique in Charleston. Walked a few blocks to my favorite neighborhood coffee shop, touched the cool glass of the iced coffee they handed me, and settled in. There’s something about working from a different environment that makes me feel like I’ve got it together. Even if I’m still answering emails in leggings.

12:30 PM – Headphones + a book off the shelf
I left the café, popped in my headphones, and took the long way home. I passed a small bookstore I always walk by but never stop in. Today I did. I picked up this month’s book club pick—something I hadn’t heard of, but the cover felt right. There’s something about holding a book and walking out with it that feels more fulfilling than hitting “Buy Now.”

4:00 PM – Curling iron, perfume, a different kind of prep
I plugged in my curling iron and gave my hair a few loose waves—not going full glam, just enough to feel like I put in effort. I spritzed my favorite perfume, the one I save for nights out with friends. Getting ready isn’t just about how you look—it’s about how you feel stepping into the night.

5:30 PM – A martini glass
Extra dirty, no vermouth, three olives. It’s always the same. It’s a ritual at this point, not just a drink. I met up with friends at our usual happy hour spot, and there was something comforting about the first sip—sharp, cold, familiar.

6:30 PM – Chopsticks and shared sushi
We went to a cozy little sushi spot, the kind with dim lighting and too many rolls to choose from. I touched chopsticks, passed plates around, and laughed more than I have all week. Nights like this make the rest of the chaos feel worth it.

8:30 PM – My phone, the Uber handle
Called a ride home and leaned against the door, slightly buzzed and full. I scrolled a bit, but mostly just stared out the window. My life has changed a lot lately, but moments like this—quiet, in transit, content—anchor me.

9:00 PM – Hydration and movement
Dropped a Nuun tablet into water because I’ve learned the hard way that martinis and no electrolytes do not mix. Then, in a random burst of energy, I grabbed my yoga mat and did a short buzzed flow. Was it graceful? No. But it felt good to move. That’s enough.

10:00 PM – My remote, my sheets, my weighted blanket
I watched one episode of The Vampire Diaries (yes, I’m rewatching it—again), then pulled back my sheets, slid under my weighted blanket, and let the day close out.

When I look at the things I touched today, I don’t see randomness—I see rhythm. A balance of movement and pause, care and convenience, work and play. The objects we interact with tell us a lot about how we live.

And sometimes, all it takes to feel a little more connected to your life… is noticing what’s already in your hands.
